Neighborhood History
Corktown is the oldest neighborhood in Detroit, dating back to 1834.  The name "Corktown" originated as a result of the Irish immigrants who settled in the area -- most of whom came from County Cork in Ireland.  By the early 1850s, more than half of the Eighth Ward, which contained Corktown, was comprised of residents of Irish descent.

The residential section of Corktown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a City of Detroit Historic District.
